What Makes a Vidalia Onion?

Special onions require special care—and a whole lot of Southern charm. From the soil they grow in to the seeds they sprout from, every Vidalia® is nurtured with purpose and precision. Here’s what sets them apart from all the rest.

Born to Be Sweet

Vidalias are grown from select yellow Granex hybrid seeds, carefully tested for a minimum of three years to ensure they meet the sweet, mild flavor profile we’re known for. Only the best make the cut.

It’s All About the Dirt

These sweet onions are grown exclusively in 20 South Georgia counties, designated by the Federal Marketing Order No. 955. Why? The low-sulfur soil in this region is what gives Vidalias their signature sweetness. If it’s not from here, it’s not a Vidalia.

Flat-Out Recognizable

Unlike most onions, Vidalias have a uniquely flat shape—a subtle clue that you’re about to experience something special.

Know It When You See It

Look for the PLU sticker code 4159 when shopping. That’s the official sign you’re holding a real Vidalia® onion.

Federal Marketing Order No. 955

Established in 1989, this order protects the Vidalia® name and ensures that every onion labeled as such meets strict quality standards. It also provides funding for research, marketing, and grower support—helping preserve the heritage and reputation of this beloved Georgia crop.
